If you're leaving your Windows PC in a hurry and don't wish to power it off, you can create a desktop shortcut that will instantly lock your desktop, requiring a username and password to get back in.
To create a new shortcut in Windows XP, right-click the desktop; select 'New', followed by 'Shortcut'. When the 'Create Shortcut' wizard prompts you for the location of the item, type in (without the quotes) 'rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation' and click 'Next'. Enter a name for this shortcut (such as 'Lock this PC') and click 'Finish'.
You can also change the shortcut's icon and place it on your Quick Launch bar. To do so, simply right-click the shortcut, select 'Properties' and then click the 'Change Icon' button. In the 'Look for icons in this file' field, type in Shell32.dll and press enter. Select one of the icons from the list (such as the padlock icon) and then click 'OK' when you're done.
Next, drag the shortcut over to the Quick Launch bar for easy access. If you don't already have the Quick Launch bar enabled, right-click an empty area on the taskbar and select 'Properties'. Under the Taskbar appearance' section, select the 'Show Quick Launch' checkbox and click 'OK'.
